Bonita Boyd is a Professor of Flute at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. She holds dual roles as an internationally renowned performer and educator. Her career spans over four decades, marked by principal flutist positions with the Rochester Philharmonic (1971–1984), Chautauqua Symphony, and Aspen Festival Symphony. She has performed globally with orchestras such as the Western Australia Symphony and Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, and her recordings include Samuel Adler’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra and Roberto Sierra’s Concierto Caribe.
Education: Early training under Joseph Mariano and others laid the foundation for her career. Her performances emphasize contemporary works, including premieres of pieces like Flute Concerto by Melinda Wagner (2010 Pulitzer Prize winner). She has been a faculty member at Eastman since 1976 and served as President of the National Flute Association.
Research/Performance Focus: Specializes in 19th–21st century flute repertoire, pedagogy, and interpretation of modern compositions. Her recordings, such as Paganini Caprices and Quicksilver, highlight technical mastery and artistic innovation.
