Bojan Bugarič

Professor Bojan Bugarič is Professor of Law at the University of Sheffield School of Law since September 2018. Previously he lectured at the University of Ljubljana and held visiting positions at the University of Trento, UCLA School of Law, and Harvard University’s Center for European Studies. He is a member of the Sheffield Institute for Corporate and Commercial Law and the Sheffield Centre for International and European Law.

Research Interests: Professor Bugarič’s scholarship centres on constitutional law, comparative constitutional law, EU law, and the interplay between law, democracy and populism. He also explores law and development and issues of international trade, war and peace. His current projects investigate the resilience of the rule of law and democracy across diverse comparative and institutional settings.

His recent publications address the global rise of populism and its impact on constitutional democracy, analysing both authoritarian and democratic variants of populist movements, with special attention to Central and Eastern Europe.

Professional Service & Memberships: Professor Bugarič serves as reviewer for numerous leading journals and publishers, including Law & Society Review, European Constitutional Law Review, Cambridge University Press, and Routledge. He is an active member of the Law and Society Association, ASEEES, EUSA, ICON-S, and the International Social and Economic Rights Project (iSERP).

Between 2000 and 2004 he served as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of the Interior in the Slovenian government, bringing practical policy experience to his academic work.
