Bodo Steiner is a Professor of Food Economics & Business Management at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Department of Economics and Management. He leads the research group Management & Organizations For Sustainable Food Systems and serves as Deputy Director of the Department. He coordinates the Making Agricultural Trade Sustainable (MATS) project, funded by Horizon 2020. Key roles include membership in the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ), and Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (URBARIA).
Education: PhD in Agricultural & Food Economics from the University of Reading (1999), with prior academic appointments at institutions like UC Berkeley and University of Alberta. Research focuses on organizational sustainability, social capital in food systems, and circular economy strategies. He has published widely in journals like Ecological Economics and Journal of Cleaner Production.
Teaching includes courses on global food value chains, innovation management in agrifood systems, and circular business models. Notable projects include MATS (2021–24), TraditionGood (2021–23), and Increasing Consumer Trust (2020–22). Awards include the Best Conference Paper 2024.
Professional affiliations span global networks like the Institute for the Economy for the Common Good and the Climate Bonds Initiative. His work bridges academia and policy, addressing sustainability challenges in food systems and value chains.
