Bjørn Morten Hofmann

Bjørn Morten Hofmann is a Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Gjøvik and an adjunct professor at the Centre for Medical Ethics at the University of Oslo. He holds a PhD in philosophy of medicine and has expertise in both natural sciences and humanities. His primary research focuses on philosophy of medicine, bioethics, technology assessment, and health services research. Hofmann teaches ethics and philosophy at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.

Prior roles include researcher at the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services (2002–2013) and a Harkness Fellow at Dartmouth College (2014–2015). He has led or contributed to multiple national/international projects, including the Improving Radiological Services (IROS) initiative (2020–2023) and the EU-funded HYBRIDA project (2021–2024). His work emphasizes reducing low-value healthcare practices, improving imaging service quality, and ethical dimensions of emerging technologies like organoids.

Research interests span bioethics, medical philosophy, and the societal impact of health technologies. He critiques overdiagnosis, excessive biomarker reliance, and geographic disparities in healthcare access. Hofmann frequently engages in public discourse through media articles and op-eds addressing topics like AI ethics, private healthcare, and sustainable healthcare systems.

Notable collaborations include partnerships with the University of Bremen, University of Sheffield, and international HTA networks. He advocates for ethical frameworks in health technology assessment and research integrity, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to address polarization in science and healthcare.
