Bjørn Morten Hofmann is a Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Gjøvik and the Centre for Medical Ethics at the University of Oslo. He holds a PhD in medical philosophy with expertise in both natural sciences (physics and medical technology) and humanities (history of ideas and philosophy).
His research focuses on medical philosophy, science theory, technology assessment, healthcare research, and ethics. He teaches ethics, science theory, research methods, and medical philosophy at undergraduate, graduate, and PhD levels. Hofmann has held research positions at the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services (2002–2013) and was a Harkness Fellow at Dartmouth College (2014–2015).
He leads or collaborates on major projects such as the Norwegian Research Council-funded IROS (2020–2023) and EU Horizon 2020 initiatives like HYBRIDA (2021–2024) and ROSiE (2021–2024). His work addresses ethical dimensions of emerging technologies, healthcare system optimization, and low-value medical services.
Publications span overdiagnosis critiques, imaging ethics, organoid research, and public health policy. Hofmann frequently engages in interdisciplinary collaborations and policy advocacy, emphasizing the societal impact of medical technologies and healthcare practices.
