Professor Björn Dressel is a leading scholar in comparative constitutionalism and judicial politics at the Australian National University (ANU), serving as inaugural Director of the ANU Philippines Institute. He holds a Professorship in the Crawford School of Public Policy's Department of Policy & Governance. With a PhD from Johns Hopkins SAIS, a law degree from the University of Trier specializing in International/EU/Constitutional Law, and MA from SAIS, his expertise spans Asia-Pacific governance, public finance reform, and legal institutions. His research focuses on judicial politics in Southeast Asia, constitutionalism, and rule of law challenges.
Notable achievements include the ARC Discovery Early Career Research Award (2013–2019) and leadership of an ARC project on judicial loyalties in Southeast Asia (2023–2026). He advises international organizations like the World Bank and has held visiting roles at institutions such as iCourts (Denmark) and SEIKEI University (Japan). His work examines governance in emerging markets, public financial management, and political settlements in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. He co-edits the Asia & Pacific Policy Studies journal and has authored/co-authored influential books including Courts and Politics in Southeast Asia (CUP, 2024) and Politics and Constitutions in Southeast Asia (Routledge, 2016). His research bridges academic rigor with policy impact, addressing critical issues like judicial independence, democratic backsliding, and pandemic governance.
