Dr. Biti Roi serves as faculty teaching Kabbalah and Hasidism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, while holding a senior research fellowship at the Shalom Hartman Institute.
Her scholarly focus centers on Jewish mystical traditions, particularly the Tikkunei ha-Zohar and its interpretive frameworks. Her research explores the multivocal nature of Torah interpretation within Kabbalistic literature, examining how medieval and early modern Jewish mystics developed sophisticated hermeneutical approaches to sacred texts. Special attention is given to the theological implications of viewing Torah as possessing "seventy faces" and how this concept shaped Jewish mystical thought.
Her notable recognition includes:
- World Union of Jewish Studies Prize for best book in Jewish Studies (awarded for Love of the Shekhina: Mysticism and Poetics in Tiqqunei ha-Zohar)
Dr. Roi's academic contributions bridge historical scholarship with contemporary relevance, particularly in how traditional Jewish interpretive methods can inform modern understandings of sacred texts. Her forthcoming English translation of her award-winning book in Indiana University Press's "Olamot" series will expand the accessibility of her research to broader academic audiences.
Her institutional affiliations with both the Hebrew University and Shalom Hartman Institute position her at the intersection of traditional academic scholarship and applied Jewish thought in contemporary Israeli society.
