Prof. Zvi Zohar serves as the Chauncey Stillman Professor of Sephardic Law and Ethics at Bar Ilan University, holding dual appointments in the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Jewish Studies. He concurrently maintains a Senior Research Fellow position at the Shalom Hartman Institute of Advanced Judaic Studies in Jerusalem.
Zohar earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Institute for Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His academic trajectory demonstrates deep specialization in Sephardic legal traditions and their contemporary applications.
His research spans Sephardic jurisprudence, Jewish ethical frameworks, rabbinic creativity in modern contexts, and the religious thought of Middle Eastern Jewish communities. Zohar examines how historical Sephardic legal reasoning interfaces with contemporary ethical dilemmas, challenging Orthodox perceptions of biblical scholarship as threats rather than opportunities for theological development.
