Birgitta Wireklint Sundström is a Professor at the University of Borås within the Academy of Care, Working Life and Welfare, Department of Care Sciences. She conducts research primarily through PreHospen – Center for Prehospital Research, focusing on close care, early assessment, and optimal care levels for patient groups in ambulance healthcare.
Her research emphasizes a health science perspective within medically dominated care environments, advocating for a complementary approach that integrates holistic views of people, health, environment, care, and suffering alongside biological perspectives. She believes both perspectives are essential for providing complete help and alleviating suffering.
Wireklint Sundström's work centers on strengthening ambulance nursing and other professions through evidence-based care practices. Her research interests include building evidence for emergency interventions in ambulance care and emergency response centers, with particular attention to the caring approach of caregivers as a vital research area.
As a senior researcher, she serves on the Research Ethics Committee at the University of Borås (2022) and has held numerous academic leadership positions including Director of PreHospen – Center for Prehospital Research (1999-2017) and Coordinator for the Forum for Prehospital R&D in the Västra Götaland Region (2008-2017).
She has served as opponent for doctoral dissertations and on grading committees, demonstrating her active engagement in academic mentorship. Her thesis Prepared to be unprepared – a phenomenological study of nursing assessment and its learning in ambulance care (2005) from Växjö University established her research foundation.
Wireklint Sundström is also a referee for prominent journals including Journal of Emergency Primary Health Care, BMC Nursing, and BMJ Open, reflecting her scholarly standing in emergency and prehospital care research.
