Biray Kolluoğlu is a Professor of Sociology at Bogazici University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She currently serves as Chair of the General Sociology Division. Her research focuses on historical sociology, nationalism, social memory, urban space, and cultural theory. She has conducted significant studies on Istanbul's urban transformation, spatial politics, and the intersections of class, religion, and secularity in education.
Her educational background includes a PhD from Binghamton University. She has led major research projects including 'Expansion of Universities in Turkey' (2021- ) and 'Parenting and Education: Navigating Class, Religiosity and Secularity' (2018-2019). Her teaching portfolio spans advanced courses on nationalism, social memory, culture-society relations, and sociological theory.
Key research contributions include analyses of Mediterranean urban histories, neoliberal spatial formations in Istanbul, and cultural practices in modernity. Her edited volume Cities of the Mediterranean (2010) and co-authored article on Istanbul's spatial politics (2008) are seminal works in urban sociology.
Administratively, she oversees the General Sociology Division's academic programs while maintaining active participation in international scholarly networks through her publications and conference engagements.
