Bin Yang

Professor Bin Yang is an Honorary Professor of Renal Medical Research in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Leicester and serves as a Chief Investigator for multiple research projects within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Her work bridges academic research and clinical application in kidney diseases.

Research Interests: Prof Yang's research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying acute kidney injury (AKI) and its progression to chronic kidney disease. She investigates processes including cell death, inflammation, immune response, tissue repair, remodeling, and fibrosis in both native and transplanted kidneys. Her work aims to identify and validate translational biomarkers and therapeutic interventions.

Scientific Contributions: She has developed a range of biological models such as clinic-grade isolated kidney perfusion systems, rodent and porcine models, and kidney cell cultures, complemented by studies on human kidney biopsies and blood samples. Recently, she has led clinical studies validating biomarkers like SERPINA3 and SILP1 in high-risk patient populations.

Innovation in Therapy: In collaboration with chemists at the University of Leicester and industry partners, Prof Yang has designed an organ/cell-targeted gene therapy using caspase-3 siRNA conjugated with the HBSP ligand peptide, which selectively targets injured cells via EPOR/βcR receptors.
