Bill Wringe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Bilkent University, Ankara, and currently on leave as an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of York (UK). He holds a PhD from the University of Leeds and has held academic positions at multiple institutions, including part-time roles. His research focuses on social and political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and ethics, with a particular emphasis on collective obligations, punishment theory, and the philosophy of emotion.
Education: B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy from Balliol College, Oxford; M.Litt in Logic and Metaphysics from the University of St Andrews; PhD in Philosophy from the University of Leeds.
Research Interests: Collective agency and obligations, non-paradigmatic punishment, philosophy of emotion, Hellenistic philosophy, and the intersection of social ontology with political philosophy. His work explores how social phenomena shape psychological, ethical, and political life.
Publications: Includes a monograph An Expressive Theory of Punishment (2016), edited volumes on collective responsibility, and articles in journals such as Noûs, Philosophical Studies, and American Philosophical Quarterly. Current projects include a book on collective obligations and collaborations on Enlightenment abolitionism.
Grants/Supervision: Supervises three PhD students at Bilkent on social ontology and political philosophy. Collaborates on a British Academy-funded project with Prof. Sandrine Berges.
Labs/Teams: Actively involved in academic reading groups and serves as a keynote speaker for the International Social Ontology Society (ISOS) in 2025.
