Bill Stevens is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Music at Santa Clara University, where he directs the Aural Skills program and teaches Jazz Piano. He holds a Master's Degree in Piano Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2002) and a Bachelor's from Oberlin Conservatory (2000), with dual majors in Music Composition and Oral Music (listening/improvisation). His research focuses on jazz pedagogy, integrating Deep Listening principles, and exploring connections between music, spirituality, and psychological healing.
Key affiliations include:
- Founder of Avivo, a community fostering creativity through music
- Past faculty at The Walden School’s Young Musicians’ Program (2000–2010) and Teacher Training Institute (2006–2011)
- Host of The Bill Stevens Jazz Hour at Ruggero Piano
His work bridges music and mindfulness, informed by studies in Deep Listening (with Pauline Oliveros) and Somatic Experiencing trauma therapy. Awards include the Presidential Scholars Award (1995) and recognition from NFAA. He is also an ordained member of The Helix Healing Ministry.
