Bill Savage is a Professor of Instruction and WCAS Advisor at Northwestern University’s Department of English. He holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and specializes in 20th- and 21st-century American literature, literary criticism, and hermeneutic theory. His research focuses on Chicago’s textual traditions, urban spaces, and the intersection of public/private identity. He is the author of The Old-Time Saloon: Not Wet, Not Dry—Just History (2016) and co-editor of Rust Belt Chicago: An Anthology (2017). He also contributes to the Chicago Reader and Chicago Tribune, and participates in Chicago’s live literary scene.
Education:
- Ph.D. in English, Northwestern University
Research Interests: Chicago’s cultural and urban history, including street naming systems, saloon culture, and material texts. Current projects include a book on Chicago’s street grid system titled The City Logical v. the City Beautiful.
Teaching: Courses such as ’The Chicago Way’: Urban Spaces and American Values, American Novel: Defining America, and Baseball in American Narratives.
Public Engagement: Series editor for the University of Chicago Press’ Chicago Visions and Revisions series, and instructor for adult education seminars at the Newberry Library. A lifelong resident of Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.
