Amanda Seligman

Amanda Seligman is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). She also serves as an Affiliated Professor in Urban Studies, bridging the gap between historical analysis and contemporary urban issues. Her academic work focuses on the interplay between neighborhoods and public policy, with a regional emphasis on Chicago and Milwaukee.

Her research interests span Urban History, Public Policy, and Graduate School Pedagogy. Her recent publications highlight innovative approaches to digital history engagement, such as using Twitter for historical reenactments, and explore the socio-political landscapes of Midwestern urban centers. Amanda co-edited the Bibliography of Metropolitan Milwaukee (2014) and authored Chicago's Block Clubs: How Neighbors Shape the City (2016), a study of community organizations' impact on urban development.

Seligman contributes to public scholarship through editorial roles, including Senior Editor of the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee and Series Editor for the University of Chicago Press's Historical Studies of Urban America. She is a vocal advocate for graduate education, evidenced by her book Is Graduate School Really for You? (2012). Her teaching covers historical methods, urban problems, and professional development in history education, with courses like HIST 450: History of Milwaukee and HIST 971: History of American Urban Problems.
