Bill N. Cooke is a Professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University (MSU). He holds a PhD (1977) and MA (1973) from the University of Illinois, and a BS in Economics (1970) from Eastern Illinois University. His expertise lies in global HR management, business strategy integration with technology, international industrial relations systems, and union-management partnerships.
Cooke has held academic roles at MSU, the University of Michigan, Purdue University, and Wayne State University, with visiting positions at Cornell University and the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on multinational companies' global strategies, workplace innovation, and the impact of globalization on labor relations. He has authored over 30 books and articles, including Multinational Companies and Global Human Resource Strategies (2003).
His work has been funded by NSF, Russell Sage, and Rockefeller Foundations. He has advised over 30 companies and led executive education programs in labor-management relations. Key themes in his research include foreign direct investment determinants, labor-management cooperation, and the effects of technology on workplace strategies.
Cooke’s consulting spans industries like automotive, energy, and manufacturing, with expertise in contract negotiations and interest-based bargaining. He served as a trustee for the Ford-UAW VEBA Trust and advised organizations such as Dow Chemical, GM, and the UAW. His contributions bridge academic research and practical applications in global HR and labor relations.
