Dr. Bilal ÖZASLAN is a dedicated researcher and academic specializing in Geotechnical and Earthquake Engineering. Currently serving as a Doctor Research Assistant at Tokyo Institute of Technology's Department of Architecture and Building Engineering, he previously held Research Assistant positions at Ahi Evran University and Istanbul Technical University. His academic journey spans over a decade with significant contributions to seismic analysis and soil mechanics research.
Dr. ÖZASLAN's educational background includes:
- Postdoctoral studies in Earthquake Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology (2023-2024)
- PhD in Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Mechanics from Istanbul Technical University (2014-2022)
- MSc in Construction Management from Istanbul Technical University (2011-2014)
- BSc in Civil Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (2006-2011)
His research focuses on geotechnical earthquake engineering, particularly the seismic response of alluvial basins and soil-structure interaction. Dr. ÖZASLAN employs advanced numerical methods to analyze ground motion amplification in sedimentary basins and develops methodologies for site-specific seismic hazard assessment. His work bridges theoretical geotechnical principles with practical earthquake engineering applications, contributing to safer infrastructure design in seismically active regions.
Dr. ÖZASLAN's publication record shows a consistent focus on seismic site response analysis, with recent work addressing the 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake sequence. His research demonstrates a progression from fundamental soil mechanics investigations to sophisticated numerical modeling of complex seismic phenomena. The interdisciplinary nature of his work connects civil engineering, geophysics, and computational mechanics, reflecting the multifaceted challenges of earthquake engineering.
Among his notable recognitions:
- Recipient of Istanbul Technical University's 2022 Most Successful Doctoral Thesis Award (2023)
- Multiple ULAKBİM Publication Incentive Awards (2020-2022)
- ITÜ Faculty of Civil Engineering Doctoral Thesis and Project Research Poster Day recognition (2020)
Dr. ÖZASLAN has collaborated extensively with researchers from Istanbul Technical University, Gebze Technical University, and international institutions including Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research has been supported by prestigious grants including TÜBİTAK 2219-International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and Japan Education Scholarship (JASSO). These collaborations have resulted in significant contributions to seismic microzonation and ground motion prediction.
As an active member of professional organizations including the Society of Exploration Geophysicists of Japan (SEGJ), Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ), and Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), Dr. ÖZASLAN engages with the global earthquake engineering community. His current research at Tokyo Tech focuses on modeling long-period ground motion for aftershocks of major earthquake sequences, contributing to improved seismic safety standards.
