Biba Bell is an Associate Professor of Dance at Wayne State University, where she contributes to the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. Her work bridges choreography, performance studies, and ecological activism, often situated in unconventional spaces like museums and forests.
- Education: PhD and MA in Performance Studies from New York University; BA in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Dance from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Her research explores the intersections of domesticity, labor, architecture, and environmental conservation, particularly through the concept of epiphytic choreographies. Bell’s practice is rooted in site-specific and experimental performance, influencing global collaborations with artists like Maria Hassabi and Walter Dundervill.
She has been featured in prominent venues such as the Kitchen, Centre Pompidou, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and Detroit Opera productions under Yuval Sharon. Her career also includes contributions to the performance collective Modern Garage Movement (2005-2011, 2021).
