John Bell is a Professor in the Division of Performing Arts at DeSales University. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Music from Ohio Wesleyan University. Previously, he served as Director of Musical Theatre at the University of Central Florida, Director of Music Theatre and Opera at James Madison University, and Head of Dance at the University of Michigan-Flint.
His research focuses on musical theatre, Stephen Sondheim scholarship, theatre direction, and music theory. He has authored books including Elaine Stritch: The End of Pretend and co-authored Score: Music Theory for Musical Theatre. He has also contributed to academic anthologies like Playing with Theory in Theatre Practice and published in journals including The Sondheim Review and Theatre Studies.
Professionally, Bell has directed, choreographed, or conducted over 100 productions at venues including the Tony Award-winning Old Globe Theatre, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Virginia Opera. As a composer and librettist, his musicals Rivers Run Deep and Making Home have been produced regionally.
He maintains memberships with the Dramatist Guild, Actors Equity Association, Music Theatre Educators Alliance, and Association for Theatre in Higher Education.
