Chris Johnson is a Professor and Director of Dance in the Theatre and Dance Department at Beloit College. She holds an MFA from the University of Illinois, an MA from California State University, and a BA from Luther College. Her teaching focuses on choreography, dance kinesiology, and modern/jazz technique, including a popular course on Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Somatics for Movers. Her research emphasizes social justice issues such as privilege, marginalization, and social identity.
Johnson’s choreographic work has been showcased internationally at festivals like the DUMBO Dance Festival (Brooklyn, NY), Detroit Dance City Festival, and the World Dance Alliance. She has received notable awards including the Grand Prix at the Festival of Choreographic Collectives in Moscow and the inaugural commission from Side Street Studio Arts’ Going Dutch Festival. Her piece Wreath of Memories was performed at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Her performances often address social themes, with invited works at the White Privilege Conference and Luminosity (collaborating with the professional choir Cor Cantiamo). Johnson has presented work in Tanzania, France, Newfoundland, Belgium, and across the U.S., with frequent selections for American College Dance Association gala concerts. She directs Beloit’s dance program and was honored with the James R. Underkofler Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002.
