Dr. Bethany Shiner is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Middlesex University's Faculty of Business and Law, specializing in human rights and public law. Her research examines freedom of thought protections, military accountability frameworks, and regulatory challenges in digital campaigning.
Shiner previously worked as a judicial review solicitor focusing on Human Rights Act cases, including high-profile litigation against the UK Ministry of Defence regarding alleged human rights violations during the Iraq War. This practical experience informs her scholarly work on legal accountability.
Her research investigates the intersection of emerging technologies with fundamental rights, particularly how neurotechnologies challenge traditional legal protections of mental autonomy. She actively contributes to comparative analyses of freedom of thought across international jurisdictions.
Current teaching responsibilities include module leadership for Public Law and serving as Link Tutor for the LLM SQE pathway. Her pedagogical approach bridges theoretical frameworks with practical legal challenges.
