Bethany Hastie is an Associate Professor at the Peter A Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia. She holds a BBA (Capilano University), JD (UBC), LLM, and a DCL (McGill University). Her research focuses on precarious labour, migrant workers' rights, gender and work dynamics, and the intersection of labour law with human rights and technology. She is affiliated with UBC’s Centre for Migration Studies and Centre for Feminist Legal Studies.
Her current research includes SSHRC-funded projects on collective representation for precarious workers, CBA-funded analysis of BC/Ontario sexual harassment law, and Law Foundation of BC-funded studies on migrant worker recruitment legislation. She teaches Torts and Human Rights Law in Canada.
Recent awards include the UBC Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship (2024) and Peter Wall Institute Wall Scholar (2021-22). Her work has influenced BC Human Rights Tribunal rulings on sexual harassment and platform worker protections. She explores legal frameworks for addressing technology-driven workplace challenges, such as AI surveillance and gig economy vulnerabilities.
Professor Hastie holds SSHRC, O’Brien Fellowships, and was a UBC Green College Leading Scholar (2017–2019). She advises graduate students in labour law, transnational law, and feminist legal studies. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges law, migration studies, and social justice advocacy.
