Professor Young's research focuses on the intersections between constitutional law, social justice, and human rights. Her work particularly emphasizes equality law and theory, women's economic equality, urban theory, and local housing politics and rights. She explores how environmental justice, social justice, feminism, and human rights intersect in contemporary legal frameworks. Her scholarship often addresses how constitutional mechanisms can be leveraged to advance social and economic rights, particularly for marginalized communities.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward examining the role of law in addressing systemic inequalities, with increasing focus on climate justice, housing rights, and the relationship between social rights and constitutional interpretation. Young's work consistently bridges theoretical frameworks with practical legal applications, particularly in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms context. Her scholarship reveals a growing emphasis on how traditional legal structures can be adapted to address contemporary social challenges.
Professor Young serves on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Women and Law, the Review of Constitutional Studies, and Studies in Housing Law, and became co-editor of the Law and Society Review in 2016. She is actively involved with professional organizations including Justice for Girls, the David Suzuki Foundation, and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives-BC Office.
As a research associate with Green College, the Peter Wall Institute of Advanced Studies, and the Centre for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at UBC, Young collaborates across disciplines to advance social justice through legal frameworks. She frequently works with provincial and national women's equality groups during United Nations committees' periodic reviews of Canada's human rights record, traveling as an NGO representative to meetings in New York and Geneva. Her community engagement extends to the BC CEDAW Group and the Feminist Alliance for International Action, where she contributes legal expertise to international human rights advocacy.
