معرفی
Beth A. Winkelstein serves as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Northeastern University while holding a professorship in Bioengineering. Previously, she was deputy provost and the Eduardo D. Glandt President’s Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering and Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Her pioneering research focuses on injury and pain mechanisms from sports, auto accidents, and degenerative diseases.
Education:
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Duke University, 1999
- BSE in Bioengineering, University of Pennsylvania, 1993
Research Focus: A global leader in orthopaedic biomechanics, Dr. Winkelstein investigates spinal injury mechanisms, neuropathic pain pathways, and tissue remodeling using interdisciplinary approaches. Her work spans computational modeling, in vivo rat models, and translational development of pharmacological treatments and biomedical devices targeting musculoskeletal disorders.
Publication Analysis: Recent publications (2022-2025) reveal three dominant themes: (1) Spinal biomechanics of facet joints and disc degeneration using subject-specific modeling; (2) Molecular mechanisms of pain involving MMPs, inflammatory cytokines, and neuronal dysregulation; (3) Regenerative approaches using stem cell secretomes and targeted drug delivery systems. Her work consistently bridges engineering principles with clinical pain management.
Scientific Recognition:
- Fellow of Biomedical Engineering Society (2014)
- Fellow of American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2013)
- ASME Fellow and Van C. Mow Medal recipient
- Y.C. Fung Young Investigator Award (2006)
- NSF CAREER Award (2006)
- NIH Research Career Award (2002)
Research Leadership: Continuously funded by NIH, NSF, and DoD, Dr. Winkelstein served as Editor of the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering (2012-2020) and chairs ASME's Board of Editors. She actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration through the World Council on Biomechanics and develops evidence-based practices in bioengineering education.
Research Enterprise: She directs an integrated research program examining injury-pain relationships across multiple anatomical sites (spine, TMJ, peripheral joints) using multiscale approaches from molecular signaling to whole-organ biomechanics, with emphasis on translating findings to clinical interventions.
