Bernice Donszelmann

Bernice Donszelmann is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art Theory at the BA Fine Art programme at Chelsea College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London. She is also a visual artist, writer, and co-founder of the curatorial group Outside Architecture. Her academic roles include PhD supervision and external examining at institutions such as the University of Brighton, Bergen School of Architecture, and LASALLE College of the Arts.

Her research explores the intersection of the body, architectural space, and materiality through sculpture, performance, and curatorial projects. Recent projects include exhibitions like Drift (2019) and Architectures in Air (2023), alongside participatory performances such as [these roarers] (2018) and INCANDESCENCE (2027). She has held residencies including the Shelagh-Cluett Alice Boner Residency in India and the Tokyo Wonder Site residency.

Her writing includes essays on painting and architecture, such as 'Touch Screen' (2015) and Semper’s wall: figuring ground (2012). She supervises PhD research on topics like Gardening as choreographic dwelling and Architecture as Performance.

Teaching & Grants: She teaches studio practice, writing, and theory at the BA level. Her grants include roles as an external examiner for MA programs in Art History, Architecture, and Fine Art across multiple universities. She is a member of the Abbey Council.

Labs/Teams: Co-founder of Outside Architecture, a curatorial collective exploring non-literal architectural construction through experiential and representational processes.
