Bernd Mayer

Prof. Dr. Bernd Mayer is Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Adhesive Technology and Surfaces (IFAM) in Bremen and holds the Chair of Polymer Materials at the Department of Production Engineering, University of Bremen. He has been in these leading roles since 2010, bridging cutting-edge academic research with industrial applications in advanced materials.

His research interests lie at the intersection of polymer science, surface technology, and structural materials. With a strong foundation in chemistry and materials development, his work emphasizes adhesive systems, corrosion-resistant coatings, and functionalized surfaces for automotive and aerospace applications. These interests are reflected in both his academic leadership and industrial R&D experience.

Bernd Mayer has held key leadership positions in major research organizations. Since 2017, he has served on the Scientific Council of the U Bremen Research Alliance and as Deputy Spokesperson of the Fraunhofer MATERIALS Group. Since 2022, he has been Spokesperson of the Fraunhofer Alliance AVIATION & SPACE for the aviation sector, highlighting his growing influence in strategic materials research for high-performance industries.

His scientific contributions are supported by extensive industrial experience, including leadership roles at Henkel AG in product development and technical surfaces research. He also represents the Fraunhofer Society as shareholder in F & E Technologiebroker Bremen GmbH and serves on the Advisory Board of the Nordenham Technology Center (TZN) since 2020.
