Dr. Bernadette Henares is a Research Fellow at Curtin University's School of Molecular and Life Sciences (MLS) within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She is affiliated with the External Collaborative Research Centre, Centre for Crop Disease Management (CCDM). Her work focuses on fungal and bacterial pathogens impacting agricultural crops, with a particular emphasis on Ascochyta lentis, a pathogen causing ascochyta blight in lentils.
Her research interests span fungal genetics, plant disease resistance mechanisms, and bacterial quorum sensing. Key areas include genome-wide association studies, effector protein characterization, and molecular techniques such as Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. She has contributed to understanding the virulence profiles of fungal pathogens and genetic resistance in lentil cultivars.
Dr. Henares' publications highlight innovations in fungal genomics, including the use of Oxford Nanopore sequencing and the identification of novel effector proteins. Her work on nitric oxide-responsive quorum sensing in Vibrio harveyi and Bacillus subtilis transcriptional regulation further underscores her expertise in microbial genetics.
Her research aligns with agricultural sustainability, aiming to mitigate crop losses through molecular insights into plant-pathogen interactions. While no formal student advisees are listed, her contributions have advanced disease management strategies in legume crops.
