Dr. Toby Newman is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Crop Disease Management (CCDM) within the School of Molecular and Life Sciences at Curtin University. His research focuses on understanding plant-pathogen interactions, particularly in fungal pathogens like Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and developing genetic strategies to enhance crop resistance. Dr. Newman’s work spans plant pathology, genomics, and molecular biology, with a focus on crops such as chickpea and Brassica napus.
His research interests include:
- Genetic dissection of domestication traits in legumes
- Molecular mechanisms of pathogen effector proteins
- Genomic approaches to identify resistance genes in crops
- Evaluation of wild germplasm for resistance traits
Dr. Newman has contributed to over 20 peer-reviewed articles since 2014, including breakthrough studies on Sclerotinia stem rot resistance and effector biology. His work bridges fundamental plant science with applied agricultural solutions to combat crop diseases.
