Berkeley Franz is a Professor of Social Medicine at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Ohio University, and holds the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Ralph S. Licklider, D.O. Endowed Faculty Fellow in Behavioral Health. She earned a Ph.D. in Medical Sociology from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on health disparities, stigma, and implementation science, particularly in addressing opioid use disorder (OUD) and improving access to evidence-based treatments in underserved communities.
Her work includes NIH-funded studies on stigma reduction and buprenorphine implementation in rural and safety-net hospitals. She co-directs the Institute to Advance Health Equity (ADVANCE) and collaborates with the Center for Intervention Research in Schools and the Diabetes Institute. Key areas include racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare, addiction treatment barriers, and community health partnerships.
Dr. Franz has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and books, including The City and the Hospital and Not Far from Me: Stories of Opioids and Ohio. Her grants include NIH/NIDA funding for interventions targeting rural primary care providers and hospital-based OUD services.
