Laura Lander is an Associate Professor at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, holding dual appointments in the Department of Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry and Department of Neuroscience. She is also a practicing Addiction Therapist and Section Chief for Social Work at the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. With over 25 years of clinical experience in mental health and substance abuse, she specializes in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorders (OUD), including innovative models for pregnant women.
- Education: MSW from Columbia University (1994)
Lander's research focuses on clinical translational studies for OUD, integrating genetics, neuroimaging, and adjunctive therapies like mindfulness and yoga to improve treatment outcomes. Her work addresses rural healthcare disparities, neonatal outcomes, and telepsychiatry implementation during the pandemic.
Recent publications highlight her expertise in emergency department buprenorphine initiation, peer support services, and mindfulness-based relapse prevention. These studies align with her dual focus on neurobiological interventions (e.g., deep brain stimulation) and sociobehavioral approaches.
As a Co-Investigator in NIDA Clinical Trials Network and SAMHSA State Opioid Response grants, she expands MAT access in Appalachia and develops evidence-based protocols for treating OUD in diverse populations, including adolescents and pregnant women.
