Berit Potter is an Associate Professor and Interim Department Chair in the Department of Art & Film at Cal Poly Humboldt. She earned her PhD in History of Art from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts in 2015, an MA in Museum Studies from NYU in 2006, and a BA in History of Art & Visual Culture/Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2004.

Her research focuses on Art History and Museum Studies, with particular attention to the reception of Latin American and US modern art on the West Coast, the use of exhibitions as propaganda during World War II, and global perspectives in modern and contemporary art. She is currently developing a book project on Grace McCann Morley, SFMOMA’s pioneering director, exploring her advocacy for transnational narratives in art institutions.
Berit’s work spans the analysis of colonial and modern Latin American art collections, transatlantic avant-garde movements like Dada and Surrealism, and institutional practices in shaping art discourse. Her scholarship has been supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and Terra Foundation for American Art.
Before joining Cal Poly Humboldt, she taught at Mills College, San Francisco Art Institute, and University of San Francisco. She has also held positions at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Whitney Museum of American Art.
Her advising and educational contributions focus on art history and museum studies, preparing students for academic and institutional roles. Berit remains actively engaged in research, publications, and academic programs at Cal Poly Humboldt.
