Education Background:
- PhD in education theory and policy and PhD in comparative and international education with a doctoral minor in demography from Pennsylvania State University, USA (2010)
- Master of Arts degree in population studies from the Population and Research Institute, University of Nairobi
- Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree from Moi University
Benta is an education specialist with training in demographic research. Her expertise encompasses education policy issues of access, equity, and quality; the linkages between education and health outcomes for adolescents; gender issues in education; and the impact of families on education, resources allocation, and health outcomes of school-going children. She currently leads the girls' education and transition to secondary school projects within the Education Research Program at APHRC.
Her research focuses on understanding and addressing gender disparities in education systems across Africa, particularly examining how cultural practices, economic barriers, and policy frameworks affect girls' educational trajectories. Recent work analyzes teacher training curricula for gender responsiveness and demonstrates how equitable teaching practices improve academic performance in English and STEM subjects while increasing school attendance rates.
Scientific Awards:
- Ford Foundation International Fellow 2005
- Ford Foundation scholar at Pennsylvania State University (2006-2009)
Benta serves as principal investigator for the Advancing Learning Outcomes for Transformation (A LOT-Change) project in Nairobi's Urban Informal Settlements and leads the education components of the DFID-funded Adolescent Girls Initiative – Kenya (2013-2019). Her research has informed policy interventions targeting girls ages 10-14 in northern Kenya and urban slums, with particular attention to how parental involvement and community engagement strategies can improve educational outcomes.
At APHRC, Benta collaborates with policymakers and educators to translate research findings into practical solutions, emphasizing gender-responsive teaching practices, mentorship programs for girls in STEM, and institutional policies to address gender-based violence in schools. Her work demonstrates that creating inclusive learning environments where both boys and girls feel valued requires deliberate integration of gender mainstreaming throughout teacher education and school governance structures.
