Benjamin Sullivan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Science at the University of Nevada, Reno. His research focuses on understanding the biological, chemical, and physical processes within soils that govern ecosystem responses to environmental change. He leads the Nevada Soil Ecology Lab, which investigates soil-carbon interactions, meadow restoration, and nutrient cycling across diverse biomes.
- Education:
- B.S. in Environmental Science, University of Montana (2002)
- M.S. in Ecology, Northern Arizona University (2007)
- Ph.D. in Ecology, Northern Arizona University (2011)
His research spans soil carbon stabilization, nitrogen cycling, and impacts of climate and land-use changes on ecosystems. Recent work examines montane meadow restoration, litter effects on invasive species, and soil biodiversity's role in carbon sequestration. He employs field experiments, isotope labeling, and remote sensing to study these processes.
His publications (15 most recent) highlight interdisciplinary approaches to soil ecology, including carbon flux measurement, microbial activity analysis, and restoration strategies. Key themes include climate-vegetation-soil feedbacks, nutrient limitation in tropical forests, and post-disturbance carbon recovery.
