Michael Weintraub is a Professor of Soil Ecology in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Toledo's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara (2004) and a B.A. from Bard College.
His research focuses on understanding soil processes, particularly how soil microorganisms control nutrient dynamics and organic matter decomposition in response to environmental changes. Dr. Weintraub's work spans Arctic ecosystems, agricultural fields, and dryland environments, with particular emphasis on carbon and nutrient cycling under changing climate conditions.
Current research projects include the Pilot Watershed Project (examining phosphorus runoff reduction through best management practices), NSF-funded work on phosphorus bioavailability in Arctic tundra, and participation in the Coastal Observations, Mechanisms, & Predictions Across Systems & Scales project. His publication record includes significant contributions to understanding microbial controls on litter decay and nutrient cycling processes.
Dr. Weintraub teaches courses including Climate Change (EEES 2200), Soil Ecology (EEES 4250/5250), Soil Ecology Lab (EEES 4260/5260), and Writing for the Environmental Sciences (EEES 6810/8810). He directs the Ecosystem & Soil Ecology Laboratory, which conducts field and laboratory research on decomposition processes, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem responses to disturbances.
