Benjamin Etzold is a social geographer and migration scholar affiliated with the University of Bonn's Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) as a Postdoctoral Researcher. He also holds a Senior Researcher position at the Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies (BICC). His work focuses on migration, displacement, and conflict dynamics, particularly in the Global South. Etzold earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Bonn in 2012, researching street vendors' livelihoods in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
His research explores intersections between mobility, violence, and labor precarity, with current projects like 'MoVAL' linking dependency studies and conflict research. He has held academic roles including Guest Professorships at the University of Innsbruck and Freie Universität Berlin. Key areas of expertise include transnationalism, food security, and social vulnerability.
Etzold leads projects funded by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), such as 'Return and Belonging after Conflict-induced Displacement' (RE-MIG). His publications address Rohingya refugee crises, gendered violence, and protracted displacement. Collaborative efforts include the EU-funded TRAFIG project on displacement figurations.
