Benjamin Breyer is a Senior Lecturer in First-Year Writing at Barnard College, part of Columbia University. He has taught at Barnard since 2013, focusing on rhetoric, writing pedagogy, and interdisciplinary approaches to literature. Previously, he taught at Yeshiva University and Columbia’s University Writing Program. He holds a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and a B.A. in Film Studies from Clark University.
His research explores disciplinary differences in academic writing and their intersections with broader cultural narratives. Notable courses include FYW: Legacy of the Mediterranean, where students analyze Derek Walcott’s Omeros in dialogue with Homer’s epics, examining postcolonial identity and cultural hybridity.
He pioneers innovative teaching methods, including integrating AI tools to support student writing challenges. His work emphasizes the social dimensions of research and disciplinary knowledge production.
