Rachel D. Friedman serves as Professor of Greek and Roman Studies on the Sarah Mills Raynor Chair at Vassar College, where she has taught since 1997. She maintains cross-disciplinary affiliations with Africana Studies and Media Studies programs while operating from Eleanor Butler Sanders Hall.
Her academic credentials include a BA from Barnard College followed by MA, MPhil, and PhD degrees in Classics from Columbia University.
Research centers on Homeric poetry and Greek tragedy reinterpretations through postcolonial lenses, emphasizing classical reception in Africa and the African diaspora. Her work critically examines colonial legacies within classical studies and develops pedagogical frameworks for teaching reception theory.
Her 2024 Oxford University Press monograph on Derek Walcott's Omeros exemplifies her signature approach, analyzing Caribbean literary engagements with Homeric epic through landscape symbolism and decolonial narrative techniques.
Professor Friedman advises no publicly listed graduate students but teaches core courses in Greek and Roman Studies alongside the College Course curriculum and interdisciplinary programs.
