Benette Whitmore is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education from Syracuse University, an M.A. in Public Communications Management from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications (Syracuse University), and a B.A. in Sociology from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. She is certified in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).
Her academic interests focus on technical writing, communication studies, environmental education, children's literature, and environmental writing. She has authored multiple children's books, including *A Quilt for Elizabeth* (1992, 1995) and contributed to journals like *The North American Review*. She served as head writer for the PBS series *Pappyland* (1996-2003) and has created eco-performance pieces like *Rainforest Rhythms & the Jungle Jive*.
Whitmore has received numerous awards, including the ESF President's Community Service Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to environmental education through music, literature, and performance. She teaches courses such as *Writing for Environmental Professionals*, *Public Presentation Skills*, and *Philosophy and Environmental Writing*.
As a graduate advisor, she mentors students in Environmental Studies, Science & Environmental Communication & PR Management, and related fields. She collaborates with peers like Kohl and Hirsch on advising. Her publications and presentations highlight themes of environmental literacy, socio-cultural dimensions of education, and the role of narrative in conservation efforts.
