Dr. Ben Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Kent. He specializes in Renaissance art, the history of collecting, printmaking, 19th-century sculpture, and contemporary art. His work challenges traditional art-historical methodologies, emphasizing the experimental and inventive qualities of artistic processes.
Thomas co-curated the acclaimed 2017 Ashmolean Museum exhibition Raphael: The Drawings, which redefined scholarly approaches to Renaissance draughtsmanship. The exhibition won the Apollo Magazine 'Exhibition of the Year' award and was praised for its innovative focus on drawing's material and rhetorical dimensions.
His research explores the intersection of art and rhetoric, particularly how visual and material practices reflect cultural sophistication. He has published extensively on these topics and delivered lectures such as 'Curating Raphael: Invention and Eloquence' at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2018.
