Ben Highmore is a Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, affiliated with the School of Media, Arts and Humanities. His research spans cultural theory, everyday life studies, and the history of British art and design. He holds a prestigious fellowship from the British Academy (2021) and has authored influential books such as *The Art of Brutalism* and *The Great Indoors*. His work bridges academic and public audiences through essays for *The Conversation* and media appearances on BBC programs.
Education: Began as a fine artist, completed an MA in Social History of Art at University of Leeds (1990), PhD at Birkbeck, University of London (2000). Taught at University of the West of England (1993–2006) before joining Sussex in 2007.
Research focuses on post-war cultural shifts, material culture, and experimental humanities writing. Current projects include studies on abstract painter Frank Bowling and experimental methodologies in humanities research. Grants include AHRC funding for studies on playgrounds and Habitat's cultural impact. Consultancies include work with Barbican and V&A museums.
Teaching emphasizes cultural analysis of cities and public spaces. Advises PhD students across cultural studies disciplines. Active in international scholarly networks, including roles with the British Academy and AHRC grant panels.
