Ben Roberts is an Associate Professor in Digital Humanities at the University of Sussex's School of Media, Arts and Humanities, and co-Director of the Sussex Humanities Lab. Previously, he held roles as a web programmer and Lecturer at the University of Bradford. His research focuses on French media philosopher Bernard Stiegler, media archaeology, and automation anxiety. He led the AHRC-funded Automation Anxiety Network, exploring interdisciplinary responses to automation-related anxieties.
Key research interests include media archaeology as a method for rethinking technological history, critical engagements with automation's societal impacts, and the philosophy of technics. His edited volume New Media Archaeologies (2019) advances this field. He has published extensively on Stiegler's work and its intersections with media theory, labor studies, and cultural critique.
Grants include the AHRC Automation Anxiety Network (2016–2017), which produced a New Formations special issue. His work often bridges theory and practice, exemplified by the Sussex Humanities Lab's interdisciplinary approach. Current projects continue exploring technology's cultural and political dimensions through digital humanities frameworks.
