Prof. Pollyanna Ruiz is a Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, School of Media, Arts and Humanities. Her research explores media's role in social/political change, focusing on protest movements bridging marginal and mainstream spaces. She holds a BA from the University of Liverpool, MA and PhD from Sussex.
Research Interests: Protest dynamics, media representation, cultural heritage, memory studies, and activism. Current projects include ‘Remembering and Forgetting: Media, Memory, Activism’ (funded by Leverhulme Foundation) and AHRC-funded initiatives like ‘You Can’t Move History’.
Awards: Best Film in Research Award (AHRC), shortlisted for Sussex Impact and Emerging Researcher Awards. Grants include AHRC and Leverhulme funding for heritage and protest projects.
Teaching: Convenes modules on media theory, protest, and cultural studies. Supervises PhDs on topics like Egyptian artivism, Polish feminist activism, and disaster narratives.
Key Collaborations: Afterlives of Protest network, Publics Then/Now ESRC project. Films include ‘You Can’t Move History’ (AHRC award-winning).
