Professor Joanne Garde-Hansen is Head of the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds. She holds a PhD in Critical and Cultural Theory, MA in Postmodernity, and BA in English Literature. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she has received nominations for national teaching excellence awards and recognition for public engagement.
Her research explores media memory, digital heritage, and environmental communication through three interconnected strands:
- Television histories and archival practices
- Cultural dimensions of water, flooding, and drought resilience
- Intersections of ageing, gender, and machine learning in screen archives
Her recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate strong thematic coherence around environmental memory, protest archiving, and participatory methodologies. Work consistently bridges media theory with applied community resilience projects, particularly in flood-risk regions of Brazil and the UK.
Awards and Honors:
- Fellow, Higher Education Academy
- ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize Finalist (2023)
- THE Research Project of the Year Nominee (2022)
- Multiple awards for module design and public engagement
She leads major funded projects including the Leverhulme Trust's 'Women, Ageing and Machine Learning on Screen' (2024-2027) and AHRC's 'The Afterlives of Protest'. Collaborates internationally with research groups in Brazil and the EU COST Action on Slow Memory.
