Ben Fitzpatrick is a Senior Lecturer at York Business School, York St John University. With over 30 years of experience in legal education since 1993, he has held roles at institutions including the University of Birmingham, University of Leeds, Open University, University of York, University of Derby, and Coventry University Scarborough. He has served in leadership positions such as Director of the LLB at the Open University and Head of Law at the University of Derby. His career includes establishing the law school at the University of York and leading Learning and Teaching initiatives in law.
His teaching focuses on criminal law, criminal justice, public law, human rights, and the philosophy of law. He emphasizes the philosophical and political underpinnings of legal processes and supervises student dissertations in these areas. Fitzpatrick is actively involved in outreach and widening participation initiatives to promote legal literacy and interest in legal studies. He has also provided professional training to legal practitioners, police, and criminal justice professionals.
Professionally, he has acted as an External Examiner for law programs across multiple universities. His research interests align with his teaching, covering criminal law, criminal justice systems, human rights, and legal education innovation.
