Ben Coates is Associate Professor of History at Wake Forest University, specializing in U.S. global engagement, law, and empire. His book Legalist Empire (2016) analyzes international lawyers' role in early 20th-century U.S. power expansion. Current research investigates economic sanctions history.
He teaches courses on America's global influence, contributing articles to Diplomatic History and Journal of American History. Co-editor of Cornell University Press's United States in the World series, he holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
