Andrew T. Coates is a Lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies at Duke University and Managing Editor of Material Religion: The Journal of Objects, Art, and Belief. He holds a Lecturing Fellow appointment in Religious Studies (2023–Present) and previously served as an Instructor in the same department (2020–2022). His scholarly focus lies in religion and material culture, particularly technologies of the body and sensation in early 20th-century Protestantism. Coates teaches courses on religion in American life, atheism, and religion/film intersections, including RELIGION 268: Religion and Film and RELIGION 185: America's Gods: Religion in the Public Square.
Coates' research explores visual culture and Protestantism, as seen in his book What is Protestant Art? (Brill, 2018). His teaching portfolio spans undergraduate and special topics courses, emphasizing contemporary religious discourse. As Managing Editor of Material Religion, he contributes to scholarly discourse on objects and belief systems.
