Eric Reinders is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Religion at Emory University. His work bridges Chinese religious studies, Christian missionary cultures, and the intersections of religion with fantasy and translation. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1997), alongside degrees from the University of Hull (MPhil 1987, BA 1981).
His research explores how bodily experiences shape religious representations, the destruction of sacred objects in East Asia, and comparative religious practices around obeisance. Recent projects include analyzing Hayao Miyazaki's films through a moral-religious lens and studying Tolkien's works through Chinese translations. His current book project investigates how translation influences religious and fantasy narratives across cultural boundaries.
Publications include Borrowed Gods and Foreign Bodies (2004), Buddhism and Iconoclasm in East Asia (2012), and Reading Tolkien in Chinese (2024). These works reflect his interdisciplinary approach to religion, combining historical analysis, comparative theology, and cultural studies.
While no formal scientific awards are noted, his scholarly contributions have shaped discussions on mission studies, East Asian religious history, and the role of fantasy in religious expression. His advising and grants are not detailed here, but his academic leadership in Emory's Department of Religion underscores his commitment to undergraduate education and interdisciplinary research.
