Sangyop Lee is an Assistant Professor of Buddhist Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at Seoul National University. His research focuses on Buddhist intellectual history and early medieval Chinese Buddhism, with a specialization in textual analysis and religious discourse. He holds a PhD in Religious Studies from Stanford University (2021), where his dissertation explored the soteriological discourse of Shen bumie in early medieval Chinese Buddhism.
His work bridges Buddhist philosophy and historical methodologies, examining monastic ethics, textual provenance, and the construction of religious identity. Key publications analyze the Youposai wu jie weiyi jing and biographical traditions in Buddhist hagiographies like the Gaoseng zhuan.
Appointed at SNU since 2023, Lee is based in Bldg. 6, Room 424 and accessible via email at sangyoplee@snu.ac.kr. His research interests also extend to the intersection of religion and cultural history in East Asia.
