Dr. Peter Versteeg is an Assistant Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute, and the Mobilities, Beliefs and Belonging (MOBB) research group. His work focuses on religion's material dimension, secularization trajectories in the Netherlands, and interdisciplinary studies of film and literature. He has conducted extensive research on Dutch charismatic-evangelical religious practices, alternative spiritualities, and the role of ritual in mainline Protestantism.
Versteeg's research integrates historical and theoretical anthropology, exploring themes such as ritual practices, ontological dialogues, and the intersection of religion with modernity. He has authored over 90 publications, including articles and books analyzing religious narratives in film, the impact of secularization, and the evolution of religious experiences in contemporary society. His recent work examines existential themes and the material aspects of religious expression, such as space and objects.
He has supervised five PhD theses and teaches courses on Global Religion, Digital Anthropology, and AudioVisual Anthropology. His contributions to Open Theology as a guest editor highlight his engagement with academic publishing and peer review. Media contributions include expert commentary on spiritual retreats and contemporary religious phenomena.
