Ben Carter is a Professor of Medical Statistics at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, leading the Mental Health & Neuroscience Clinical Trial Statistics Group. He holds a BSc in Statistics from the University of Reading, an MSc in Medical Statistics from Southampton University, and a PhD from Reading University. His research focuses on methodological aspects of clinical trials, meta-analysis, and missing data problems, alongside applied work on digital media impact, mental health interventions, and frailty in chronic diseases. He has contributed to over 250 publications and leads major studies like the BESST trial and the 3S-YP cohort study on smartphone use and self-harm.
Key affiliations include King's College London, Cardiff University (2013–2017), and the University of Nottingham (2014–2018). He is a co-investigator on NIHR-funded projects addressing adolescent mental health, frailty assessment in surgery, and interventions for intimate partner violence. Major collaborations include the DISCOVER research group and the LeDeR report on avoidable deaths among people with learning disabilities.
His recent work emphasizes digital health solutions, including the ATTENS Project on ADHD treatment and the EDEN trial exploring ketamine for anorexia nervosa. He has pioneered studies linking smartphone usage to mental health outcomes in teens and developed frameworks for ethical social media research in youth mental health.
